A/S Media Studies;
Exam Unit: 50% of grade, focused on textual analysis of a TV drama
Coursework production unit - 50% of grade
YouTube Video: This was a starter task set at the beginning of September to be done for the end of October, to which we could film any video of our choice upon a mobile phone, as well as uploading it onto YouTube and seeing who could get as many hits as possible. It had to include at least four shots, as well as using free sound and software of some sort to edit it. I worked with Jessica Turner, where we made a short jump-cut video featuring a cheese sandwich - labelled "The Cheese Sandwich" - to which had a score of the famous 'Jaws' soundtrack from her Media edit Microsoft programme on her computer, which included various free sounds. Although not part of our actual grade, this was an entertaining starter to the year, as well as giving us some experience. Our video received 300 hits. Here is the link to our video:

Preliminary Task
Opening to a film
Planning research an evaluation are all to be represented upon this blog.
For my first AS Media Studies production, I had to include a preliminary task, to which I created in a group of four. This included a continuity task, involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character. They had to exchange some dialogue, to which I planned in a storyboard and in a plan. My video demonstrated match on action, shot-reverse-shot, as well as the 180 degree rule.
This is the storyboard of my preliminary task, which I produced in the production of my video, in order for my to set out what I was intending to do:
This is the dialogue which parallels both my video and storyboard. This allowed my actors, myself, as well as my fellow producers and directors - within my team - to easily follow the preliminary task, and overall find the job easier:
Setting: Police station, interview room. A rape victim is led in to be interviewed, in order to find out the sexual attacker.
Policewoman is sat down with a cup of coffee. The camera starts on the cup then pans up to the woman and zooms out as she browses through her notes and takes a sip at her drink. We get an overall view of her from here. A non-diagetic sound is heard of a siren, indicating the setting.
The camera then cuts to the door after the sound has faded, where we have a close-up of the handle. The camera then zooms in slightly, to emphasize the movement of the handle, and zooms back out.
Camera then cuts out to a long shot of the door, where another officer leads the victim into the room. The victim is led towards the chair.
A high-angle shot from the opposite side of the table shows the first officer accept the rape victims file, and begin to browse, whilst the victim sits patiently. The other policewoman exits.
An extreme close-up, birds eye-view of the tape recorder is shown, where the detectives finger appears on screen and presses play.
Policewoman: Interview commences at 12:34am on the 16th October 2009. In the room is Jodie Crewe, rape victim, and PC Jessica Turner. Now, Jodie, could you tell me what happened on the night of the 14th October?
Victim: He hurt me, I tried to run away... but I couldn't.
Policewoman: Didn't you tell PC Sophie Brown that you knew your attacker?
Victim: (beginning to shuffle and appear uncomfortable) No, what? I never
PC: Why would she be lying, Jodie? (leans in a little closer) WHY?!?
Victim: I don't know, stop it. I said nothing! (beginning to panic)
PC: You did know your victim didn't you? It was Bill Davies, wasn't it?
Victim: (beginning to shout) No...it...wasn't! Stop it! (hits coffee cup across the floor)
